It all started with a face that launched a thousand ships and today Warner Bros.’ big-budget, visual effects-laden treatment of Homer’s The Iliad sails into more than 3,000 theaters across North America. Framestore CFC, The Moving Picture Co., Cinesite and Lola all contribute digital wizardry to the war effort as the sword-and-sandal epic seeks to dethrone Universal’s Van Helsing at the box office.
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen (The Perfect Storm, Das Boot), Troy stars Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, Brad Pitt, Brendan Gleeson and Diane Kruger in dramatization of the events surrounding the Trojan War, which is fabled to have begun when Paris of Troy (Bloom) abducted Helen (Kruger), the wife of Spartan King Menelaus (Gleeson). The subject matter was recently handled on the small screen with a made-for-TV movie that aired on the USA cable network. Stargate Digital handled the effects for that effort.
Troy should easily sack the competition since the only other newcomer is Sony/ Screen Gems’ Jamie Fox comedy, Breakin’ All the Rules. However, next week should belong to DreamWorks’ animated Shrek 2, which arrives in theaters Wednesday, May 19.
