It came down to the wire, but Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen beat out the 3-D animated feature Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
The final tally for the weekend’s box office came in with Transfomers grossing $42.3 million, just ahead of the $41.7 million earned by Ice Age.
Earlier estimates put both films tied at $42.5 million, an unusual occurrence at the box office.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the third in the series, is so far running behind its predecessor, Ice Age: The Meltdown, which outperformed the original film in the franchise. Still, direct comparisons are tough with this new installment opening in summer instead of spring and facing an extremely strong draw in the Transformers.
The film’s five-day opening total of $66 million domestic and $151 international will at least make the film’s returns competitive with the previous films, which has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
