New Line’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is still the reigning box office champ after three weeks out of the gate. Featuring visual effects by New Zealand-based Weta Digital, The second installment in the trilogy raked in an estimated $25.6 million over the weekend, bringing it’s total to around $262 million.
DreamWorks’ Catch Me If You Can posted a close second with an estimated $21.3 million and is already closing in on the coveted $100 million mark in its sophomore week. The film begins with a retro-style animated opening credit sequence by Nexus Prods.
Warner Bros. Two Weeks Notice, Sony’s Maid in Manhattan, and New Line’s About Schmidt round out the top five while Paramount’s The Wild Thornberrys Movie holds strong in the top ten after three weeks in release. The $35 million animated adventure has brought in an estimated $31.5 million to date and is expected to out-perform Disney’s $140 million Treasure Planet, which has racked up just over $35. million in six weeks.
