Paramount’s The Wild Thornberrys Movie enters the ring with a heavyweight as it opens against New Line’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Having raked $26 million on its Wednesday bow, the second installment in the Tolkien trilogy is expected to dominate the box office over its first weekend in release.
Paramount, Nickelodeon Movies and Klasky Csupo are banking on the PG rated Thornberrys being the more kid-friendly alternative for families this holiday season. Bolstered by critical acclaim and good buzz, the animated adventure/comedy opens in just over 3,000 theaters, only 600 less than Peter Jackson’s PG-13 epic juggernaut.
Also opening in wide release today are Warner Bros.’ Two Weeks Notice and Miramax’s Gangs of New York, two strong contenders for the adult price ticket.
