Distributor Gkids is planning an Oscar-qualifying run for the anime feature film Summer Wars, increasing the possibility that enough movies will enter the race to have five nominees for this year’s best animated feature award.

The film play its qualifying run at the AMC Covina 30 from Dec. 10-16, then go to New York for a run and return to California, reports Variety.

The film, directed by Mamoru Hosoda, won the Japanese Academy Prize for the best animated feature and is bout a teen math prodigy whose summer in a small town turns into a battle between real and virtual worlds.

FUNimation has the rights to release the film on DVD and Blu-ray.

If 16 films qualify for the Oscars’ animated feature film category, five films will be nominated. If 15 or less qualify, only three nominees will be named.
