Disney announced that it will re-release Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning animated feature Spirited Away in theaters across the U.S. on Friday, March 28. While no numbers have been released, theater count is rumored to be around 800.
Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro No Kamikakushi), Japan’s biggest box office hit to date, got a limited North American release before sweeping off with the statuette for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Annual Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday. Disney is hoping the recognition will help the film find a wider audience.
In addition to the Oscar, the film has received the Annie Award from ASIFA-Hollywood and the Golden Bear Award from the Berlin Film Festival It was also named best animated film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the National Board of review.
The fantasy/adventure tale about a young girl who discovers a secret world populated by strange creatures and mysterious spirits was animated by Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli. It will be released on VHS and a two-disc DVD on April 15.
