The biggest movie at the box office is about to get even bigger. Imax Corp. and Sony Corp.’s Columbia Pictures said Wednesday that the blockbuster Spider-Man 2 is being digitally re-mastered and will be distributed globally to IMAX theaters on Jul. 23.
In Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) must choose between fighting crime as the world-famous web slinger or leading a normal life and pursuing a romantic relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dusnt). Meanwhile, Dr. Otto Octavious’ (Alfred Molina) experiments with fusion turn him into the tentacled super villain Doc Ock and only Spidey can save New York City from his destructive plans.
The film has been shattering box office records, taking in more than $180 million since its June 30 bow. The IMAX rollout should add to repeat business and help keep the revenue flowing throughout the summer.
The IMAX experience offers moviegoers images up to eight stories high and wrap-around, 12,000-watt digital sound. Once the domain of specialty films like T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous and the computer-animated 3D spectacle Santa Vs. the Snowman, IMAX theaters have in recent years expanded their bills to include such Hollywood blockbusters as the Matrix sequels, Star Wars: Episode II’Attack of the Clones and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
