Give the success of Sony’s summer blockbuster The Smurfs, which has brought int $135 million worldwide since its release on August 29, it’s not surprising that the studio has greenlit a sequel to the CG live-action/animation hybrid. Sony Pictures has announced that it plans to release The Smurfs 2 on August 2, 2013.

The film’s original producer Jordan Kerner (Charlotte’s Web, Inspector Gadget, George of the Jungle) is attached to the sequel. The movie has been performing very well at the box office in 23 markets overseas. Domestically, it grossed $78.8 million in its first ten days at the box office. No news on whether Peyo’s little blue guys—and Smurfette—plan to visit L.A., London or Paris on their next big-screen adventure, but we have a feeling their number one enemy Gargamel (played by Hank Azaria in the first pic) will follow them no matter where they end up!

Here’s a clip!
