Stephen Sommers, writer and director of Universal’s The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing, is taking a break from CG-laden horror to tackle a comic-book and Saturday matinee serial icon. According to Daily Variety, the multi-hyphenate and his producing partner, Bob Ducsay, plan to bring Flash Gordon back to the big screen. Sommers will produce and possibly write the screenplay.
Flash Gordon was created by comic strip artist Alex Raymond in 1934. The character later showed up in live-action serials, animated shorts and TV series. In 1980, Dino De Laurentiis produced the first feature-length Flash project, directed by Mike Hodges (Croupier) and featuring music by rock group Queen. That film floundered at the box office but endures as a cult favorite.
Sommers may also serve as creative consultant on a new series of Flash Gordon comic books to be distributed by Top Cow.
