Zack Snyder is returning to his comic book roots by agreeing to direct a new Superman feature film.

Snyder previously adapted Frank Miller’s comic book 300 and the Alan Moore-Dave Gibbons masterpiece Watchmen to film. He most recently directed the animated feature film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, with a new film titled Sucker Punch due out March 25.

Snyder will work with The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, who was charged by Warner Bros. with getting a new Superman feature off the ground after Bryan Singer’s 2006 attempt, Superman Returns, failed to meet lofty box office expectations.

Snyder will work with a script by David Goyer, Nolan’s Batman collaborator, based on a story by Goyer and Nolan.

Film is targeted for a holiday 2012 release.
