DreamWorks Animation announced that its blockbuster sequel Shrek the Third has grossed more than $600 million worldwide. In addition to scoring the biggest domestic opening ever for an animated film, the family comedy has been a massive hit overseas, pushing the entire Shrek Franchise over the $2 billion mark.
Having brought in an estimated $35 million from 6,114 venues across 53 territories over the weekend, the international cume for Shrek the Third now stands at $324 million. In the U.K., the movie has held onto the top spot at the box office for the last two weeks, and has also has the best opening for an animated film in a number of countries, including Russia, Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Singapore. The pic is distributed globally by Paramount Pictures and Paramount Pictures International.
Domestically, the third Shrek installment has pulled in $316 million and currently sits at No. 13 on the box office chart a full eight weeks after its North American debut. The franchise on the whole has become one of the most successful in cinema history is set to continue with a fourth film currently in development.
