For those of you eagerly awaiting director Richard Linklater’s animated adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel, A Scanner Darkly, Some new photos from the set have emerged online to stoke your curiosity.
Yes, you read correctly. There is a set where live actors are playing out the scenes, which will be transformed into animation in post through rotoscoping. Linklater first employed the method on his critically acclaimed 2001 feature, Waking Life, and promises to take the technology up a notch with this latest effort. Waking Life animation director Bob Sabiston will again oversee the process.
A Scanner Darkly will star Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson in a futuristic tale of an undercover agent (Reeves) who develops a split personality as the result of drug use.
George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh are producing the film through their Section 8 shingle, along with Jonah Smith and Palmer West of Thousand Words and the team of Tommy Pallotta and Anne Walker McBay. Mark Gill, president of co-financer, Warner Independent Pictures, is also attached as a producer.
The late Dick penned the source material for such sci-fi features as Blade Runner, Total Recall, Imposter and Minority Report. To see the photos from the set of A Scanner Darkly, visit www.philipkdick.com/films_scanner-061204.html.
