Japanese animation studio Production I.G., which owns roughly 15% of comic book company Mag Garden, intends to acquire all remaining shares, according to Daily Variety. Mag Garden will become a wholly owned subsidiary of the toon shop, and its comic properties will be mined for animated productions.
The transaction will be made via a stock swap, in which two Mag Garden shares will be exchanged for one Production I.G. share. Mag Garden, which publishes more than 100 paperback books and four comics through its Comic Blaze imprint, is worth roughly $4.4 million.
Since its founding in 1987, Production I.G has rapidly developed into one of Japan’s leading animation companies, having created the stunning visuals in the Ghost in the Shell films and a numer of other features, direct-to-video productions, television series and video games. The studio created the anime segments in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1, and also produces its own original material, including such titles as Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Blood: The Last Vampire, Vampiyan Kids and Kaidomaru.
