Daily Variety reports that producer Tommy Pallotta and animation director Bob Sabiston have come aboard director Richard Linklater’s animated feature adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel A Scanner Darkly. The George Clooney/Steven Soderbergh production shingle Section 8 is producing for Warner Independent Pictures and Keanu Reeves is starring.
Like Richard Linklater’s critically acclaimed Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly will be shot in live action and digitally rotoscoped to animation. Linklater (Dazed and Confused, School of Rock) has completed a draft of the script and is in negotiations to direct the futuristic tale of an undercover agent who develops a split personality as the result of drug use.
Sabiston served as animation director on Waking Life and Pallotta produced the animated film Road Head and the short Snack and Drink. He is also reportedly developing a film for Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console.
Production on A Scanner Darkly is slated to begin in May and will be co-financed by Warner Independent Pictures and A Thousand Words, whose Jonah Smith and Palmer West will produce alongside WIP president Mark Gill.
The late Dick penned the source material for such sci-fi features as Blade Runner, Total Recall, Imposter and Minority Report.
