Fresh off the phenomenal success of its Lord of the Rings trilogy, New Line Cinema is looking to make a tentpole of another literary series based in fantasy. According to Daily Variety, the studio is in talks with director Chris Weitz to helm a film based on author Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy.
Pullman’s book series deals with parallel worlds where humans exist alongside shape-shifters and other fantastical creatures. Weitz, who co-directed American Pie, About a Boy and Down to Earth with brother Paul, is on deck to direct The Golden Compass, the first book of the series, from a script by acclaimed poet and Shakespeare in Love scribe Tom Stoppard. New Line production president Toby Emmerich will oversee the project.
