Moviegoers Take the Dare

Twentieth Century Fox’s adaptation of Marvel Comics’ Daredevil raked it in at the box office over the 4-day holiday period. With an estimated $43.5 million take, the film had the biggest President’s Day weekend opening ever. In addition to having the second biggest February debut, the superhero actioner knocked Paramount’s romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days out of the No. 1 spot. Rivaling the on-screen sparks between stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner is visual effects work by Rhythm & Hues, Pixel Magic and Digital Domain.

Disney’s The Jungle Book 2 finished fourth behind Miramax’s Chicago. The sequel to the animated reworking of the Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale cost around $20 million to make and brought in an estimated $15 million in its first weekend. The film has been receiving mixed reviews but should prove to be one of the studio’s more profitable animated features of late.

Another of Disney’s current releases, Shanghai Knights, rounds out the top five. The comedic action adventure starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson kicked up around $12.8 million for an estimated two-week cume of $36 million.
