It’s been 25 years since Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman first brought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to life in the pages of their self-published comic book and quickly saw their creations become a worldwide phenomenon.
To celebrate, the Turtles are returning to the big screen with The Mirage Group announcing a new live-action film going into development with a targeted release date of 2011.
Mirage is partnering with producers Scott Mednick, whose credits include 300, Superman Returns and the upcoming Where the Wild Things Are; and Galen Walker, who produced the recent CG-animated TMNT film. They are currently reaching out to writers and directors for the project, which is being funded through Lightbox Productions.
The news is part of a year of special events, includeing a ‘Shell-ebration’ in New York City that includes green lights on the Empire State Building and an outdoor presentation of the first Turtles film at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Also part of the celebration is the DVD release of season seven of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. The release includes four DVDs that each feature a different Turtle on the cover and when put together form a single image. The discs will be released May 12 with a retail price of $14.98 each.
