Sony Classics has released the full trailer for Academy Award-winning animator Michael Dudok de Wit’s highly anticipated desert island fable The Red Turtle. The footage reveals a storybook inspired 2D animated world of textured seas and sands, where the main character’s emotional journey lapses between reality and dream.

The Red Turtle will receive an awards season qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles on November 18, with a wider release slated for January 20, 2017.

From acclaimed director Michael Dudok de Wit (Father and Daughter), The Red Turtle centers on a man stranded on an uninhabited island, whose attempts to escape are thwarted by a giant red-backed turtle — perhaps for the best. The screenplay is co-written by de Wit and Pascale Ferran (Lady Chatterley, Bird People). The film is a co-production of Studio Ghibli, Wild Bunch, Why Not Productions, Belvision, Arte France Cinema and CN4 Productions, with Prima Linea overseeing the animation.
