While most video games have to develop a dedicated following before getting the cinematic treatment, Eidos Interactive’s upcoming title Kane and Lynch: Dead Men is already set to become a mojor motion picture, according to Daily Variety. The trade reports that Lionsgate has picked up the film rights and is in talks with Jieho Lee (The Air I Breathe) to direct.
Set to debut this fall for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, the Kane and Lynch game has a condemned mercenary named Kane team up with a medicated psychopath to get revenge on a shadowy organization. The title is being produced by IO Interactive, the company behind the popular Hitman game franchise, which also has a feature film in the works starring Deadwood’s Timothy Olyphant as the bald-headed assassin. That pic will be distributed by 20th Century Fox in Octorber.
Lionsgate is reportedly has Kane and Lynch on a fast track to the screen and is set to begin shooting this fall. The producers will choose between two scripts in the works. One is being written by Lee and Bob DeRosa, his co-writer on The Air I Breathe. The other is being penned by Kyle Ward, a former DreamWorks assistant whose first screenplay, Fiasco Heights, was picked up by Universal Pictures and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes.
Kane and Lynch is being produced by Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter, who are also working on Fox’s Hitman film and have features based on Devil’s Due Publishing’s comic books Hack/Slash and Lost Squad set up at Rogue Pictures. Also on Askarieh’s plate is Universal’s filmed adaptation of Midway Games’ Spy Hunter, which will star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
