Labor Day Peepers on Creepers

Moviegoer dollars were pretty spread out over the Labor Day weekend but most people went for thrills and chills, putting MGM’s Jeepers Creepers 2 in the No.1 spot. Featuring visual effects by The Orphanage, the sequel to the 2001 surprise hit scared up an estimated 4-day take of $18.5 million. This is the third straight week in which horror has reigned at the box office. Last week’s top spot holder, New Line’s Freddy Vs. Jason, took a dive to No. 7 with a take of around $8 million for the long weekend.

Disney’s remake of Freaky Friday continues to build up steam, holding onto the No.2 spot in its fourth week out with around $11.7 million. While most films this summer have followed a downward progression following their debuts, the Jamie Lee Curtis vehicle has managed to climb back up the charts after slipping to No.4 in weeks two and three. The sleeper hit has netted nearly $90 million so far.

Sony’s S.W.A.T. and Disney’s holdovers Pirates of the Caribbean and Open Range round out the top 5 with just over $10 million each. Pirates has turned out to be a major hit for the Mouse House, plundering a total of more than $274 million since opening eight weeks ago. That puts it close to passing up Warner Bros.’ The Matrix Reloaded, which topped out at $278.
