Hitchhiker’s Guide Finally Lands Film Deal

With hip-hop artist/actor Mos Def and Gen-Y darling Zooey Deschanel on-board, the cult fave The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is finally making it to the big screen.

Co-produced by Spyglass Entertainment and the Walt Disney Co., the film is scheduled to begin shooting in London in early Spring with Garth Jennings directing. Hitchhiker began as a hit radio series on the BBC and quickly spawned a book series, a TV show and a vid game. The script was adapted by Douglas Adams from his own novel. After his death, scribe Karey Kirkpatrick did a rewrite.

Mos Def will play Ford Prefect, an alien disguising himself as an out-of-work actor on an intergalactic journey to find the meaning of life along with his best friend, mild-mannered earthling Arthur Dent (played by The Office’s Martin Freeman). The two hitch a ride through space with the two-headed president of the galaxy, the beautiful and brilliant scientist Trillion (Deschanel) and a robot in need of therapy.

Spyglass’ chiefs Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber are producing the feature along with Jon Glickman, Jay Roach and Nick Goldsmith. On the Disney side, Hitchhiker is being overseen by Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group president Nina Jacobson and exec VP of production Jason Reed.
