Twentieth Century Fox has announced the release date for its big-screen version of the popular comic strip Garfield. December 19 will see the lasagna-loving feline and his pals come to life through a blending of live action and digital animation a la last summer’s blockbuster Scooby-Doo.
In his feature film debut, the lazy orange tabby’s life is turned upside down when his owner, Jon, takes in the sweet but dim-witted dog Odie. Garfield, who tries everything to get Odie out of the picture, has a change of heart and springs into action when the hapless pup is kidnapped by a nasty dog trainer.
Jim Davis’ Garfield comic strip is syndicated in 2600 newspapers and is seen by more than 260 million readers around the world. The property, which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year, has been brought to the small screen in a number of 2D animated specials and a regular TV series by Lee Mendelson Films, Paws Inc. and Film Roman.
