Jon Favreau can’t get enough of comic-book movies. After wrapping his directing duties on the upcoming Iron Man 2, he is eyeing the DreamWorks/Universal adaptation of Cowboys & Aliens, Variety reports. Actor Robert Downey Jr. is already attached to the cross-genre fantasy.

Cowboys & Aliens is based on the Image Comics’ graphic novel by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindeloff (Lost, Star Trek 2) are preparing the script. The 2006 graphic novel centers on the battle between some hostile aliens who land in Arizona in the mid-1880s and the brave local cowboys and native Apache Indians.

Favreay and Downey have already signed up for Iron Man’s third outing. Iron Man 2 is slated to be released on May 10, 2010.
