Roland Emmerich, director of 10,000 B.C. and the forthcoming 2012, won the screen rights to adapt Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy’an epic sci fi series revolving around Asimov’s invented concept of ‘psychohistory’ which takes place during the collapse of a Galactic Empire.

In addition to directing, Emmerich will produce the film with Michael Wimer, his partner in Centropolis, according to a report in Variety.

Emmerich and Centropolis won the rights at an auction in which other bidders included Warner Bros. for director Alex Proyas, and Fox for producer Vince Gerardis.
