Digital Domain Gives Rock Instant Karma

Fresh off the success of his action/adventure/comedy hit The Rundown, Dwayne Johnson (aka the Rock) has signed to star in New Line’s comedy Instant Karma, to be produced by EFX studio Digital Domain. According to Daily Variety, Shrek and Pirates of the Caribbean writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot will co-produce. They also wrote the upcoming DreamWorks projects Shrek 2 and Tusker.

In the $70 million live-action/CG hybrid, The Rock’s character dies and rises up the reincarnation ranks as different animals. Pierce Brosnan, Mira Sorvino, David Alan Grier and Eartha Kit co-star in the flesh. The comedy troupe Broken Lizard, which recently made its big-screen debut with the emerging cult favorite Super Troopers, will join the animal voice cast, which also includes Gene Wilder and All Dogs Go to Heaven alums Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise.

First-time writer/director Paul Hernandez will take the helm as Digital Domain development exec. Kevin Cooper oversees production on the computer animation end. This is the second producing effort for the EFX house, whose family comedy Secondhand Lions is now in theaters.
