Guillermo del Toro, the director behind the Hellboy films and the Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth, is setting up the animated feature Trollhunters at DreamWorks Animation as part of a larger deal that will see del Toro consult on the studio’s projects, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Del Toro will write and direct Trollhunters, which will be based on a young adult book the director has submitted recently to publisher Hyperion.
The director developed a strong relationship with the studio during weekly visits to its Glendale, Calif., campus over the summer and will serve as a consultant and executive producer on upcoming DreamWorks Animation features including Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots, a spinoff of the Shrek series, the trade reports. He also had a hand in Megamind, which the studio releases Nov. 5.
The filmmaker told The Reporter he believes animation will be an incredibly important medium in the next decade and has evolved to a point where it can attract moviegoers of all ages. ‘And I want to know it from the inside,’ he told The Reporter.
