Darkness Falls Over Box Office

Sony Pictures’ chiller Darkness Falls scared up an estimated $12 million dollars over the weekend to capture the No. 1 spot. Featuring visual effects by Imageworks, Animal Logic and Stan Winston Studio, the flick tells the story of a town terrorized by a vengeful spirit dubbed “the Tooth Fairy.”

Kangaroo Jack, with effects by The Secret Lab, dropped to a close second with an estimated $11.9 million take. The comedy about an elusive jacketed kangaroo on the run with $50,000 has kicked up an estimated $35.5 million in two weeks of release.

Despite opening in only 616 theaters, Miramax’s Golden Globe winner Chicago came in at No. 3 with an estimated $8.4 million. Fox’s Just Married and Sony’s National Security round out the top five.
