Reviews for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor were largely unkind, to say the least, but a $100 million worldwide opening leaves the door wide open for another sequel for the Universal franchise. In an interview with MTV News, Tomb director Rob Cohen discusses ideas he has for a fourth installment, which seem inevitable at this point. The following includes spoilers for those who haven’t yet seen Dragon Emperor.
Brendan Fraser’s character, Rick O’Connell, may return as an immortal hero in the next film. In Dragon Emperor, Rick is treated by the pool of eternal life, and Cohen says he’s interested in seeing how that element might play out in the fourth chapter, which Fraser and co-star Maria Bello are both pushing for. If it gets the green light from Universal, the next pic is likely to take place in Peru or Mexico.
‘They have a lot of mummies,’ Cohen tells MTV. ‘The Aztec culture had a lot of mummies and some of their mummy designs for the Foundation Army were taken from Mexican mummies that they have found. So I think that somehow that might make the basis of a good story.’
Combined, the three Mummy movies have made nearly a billion dollars at the box office worldwide. Dragon Emperor had a franchise-low domestic opening of $40.4, but won the overseas box office title with nearly $60 million. Featuring ridiculous action and a lot of computer-generated animation and effects, the sequel’s success has been in providing a light, fluffy, sugary desert to the summer’s heavy main course, Warner Bros. The Dark Knight.
