Big-Screen BIONICLE Gets Comic Book Scribe

Brett Matthews, who has written Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Wars and Spider-Man comics, has been brought on to script the third BIONICLE feature for Miramax Films and LEGGO’s Create TV and Film division, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While BIONICLE: Mask of Light and the upcoming follow-up were produced for the direct-to-video market, BIONICLE 3 will take the franchise into theaters.

While the film will give Matthews his first feature credit, he did write an unaired episode of Fox’s short-lived sci-fi series Firefly for creator/exec. producer Joss Whedon, for whom he served as assistant on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series. Matthews is also writing a special anime title based on the Vin Diesel sci-fi feature Pitch Black. Aeon Flux creator Peter Chung is attached to direct that DVD release for Universal.

Based on the popular LEGGO toy line, the BIONICLE films take place on an island paradise inhabited by bio-mechanical beings who combat the forces of evil threatening to plunge their world into darkness. Aiding the villagers in their struggle are seven super-beings called Toa, who harness the awesome powers of the elements.

Creative Capers in Burbank, Calif. is heading up animation on the BIONICLE film series, the first of which debuted in September at No. 2 on the VHS sales chart behind Disney’s special edition re-release of Sleeping Beauty.
