Avatar Still Reigns, Passes Dark Knight

Another weekend, another box-office victory for Avatar, passing The Dark Knight to become the No. 2 all-time domestic grossing movie.

The James Cameron film, released by Fox, grossed $36 million in its sixth weekend of release. Its domestic total now stands at $552 million, passing the $533 million mark of The Dark Knight and eyeing the $600 million mark of Titanic.

But the film is poised to set an even bigger mark any day by surpassing Titanic‘s worldwide record to become the world’s highest-grossing film of all time. Avatar has grossed $1.28 billion overseas, bringing its worldwide total to within a few hundred thousand dollars of the record.

The horror-thriller Legion opened in second place with an $18 million weekend, followed closely by a $17 million take for the second weekend of The Book of Eli.

Fox’s family comedy The Tooth Fairy opened in fourth with $14.5 million, while CBS Films’ Extraordinary Measures opened in seventh with $7 million.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel also continued to do well, with the CG animation and live-action hybrid finishing in eighth place with a $6.5 million weekend that brought its domestic total to $204 million.

Disney’s The Princess and the Frog continues to march toward the $100 million mark, taking in $1.2 million this weekend to top off its total at $99.2 million.
