Avatar is Back with 8 New Minutes and Only in 3D

It’s baaaack!

This is the weekend that James Cameron’s Avatar, the all-time box office champ, returns to theaters with an extra eight minutes of footage added. It also is screening solely in stereoscopic 3D this time out.

How much this will add to the movie’s $2.4 billion worldwide take ‘ and its status as the top-selling Blu-ray of all time with some 19 million copies on DVD and Blu-ray sold ‘ remains to be seen. The film will hit in about 700 theaters.

Other new releases reflect the waning days of summer, with Lionsgate releasing the horror movie The Last Exorcism at about 2,900 cinemas and Sony/Screen Gems putting out the action film Takers in about 2,000 theaters.

Animation fans will still have a few options, with Universal-Illumination’s Despicable Me, DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After and Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3 still in release.
