Sony’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs was the special of the day for moviegoers the second weekend in a row.
The CG-animated 3-D movie was tops again at the box office, taking in $24.6 million. That represented a drop of only 18 percent from the previous weekend ‘ a solid performance that reflects strong word of mouth. The film has so far grossed just over $60 million.
Coming in a distant second this weekend was the sci-fi comic-book adaptation Surrogates, taking in $15 million in its first weekend. MGM’s remake of Fame opened in third place, grossing $10 million.
Meanwhile, Focus Features’ animated 9 finished the weekend in, appropriately enough, ninth place. The film, directed by Shane Acker, took in $2.8 million in its third weekend of release, bringing its domestic total to $27.1 million.
Up has finally closed its domestic run, but Pixar is set to return next week with its two-week double-feature release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3-D.
