Warner Bros.’ live action/CG feature Scooby-Doo debuted in June of 2002 with a whopping $54 million opening weekend take and went on to make more than $153 million at the North American box office. The studio is hoping to scare up more of the same this weekend as Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed hits theaters.
Raja Gosnell directs and Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini return as the meddling kids who solve spooky mysteries with help from their title CG canine companion. This time, the teenage ghostbusters investigate bizarre happenings in the city of Coolsville, where a masked villain is tampering with the “Monster Machine” to reproduce The 10,000 Volt Ghost, Captain Cutler, The Creeper and other classic creatures from the animated series on which the film franchise is based. Seth Green and Alicia Silverstone also star.
Contributing visual effects to the movie are Rhythm & Hues, Digital Dimension, Giant Killer Robots, Meteor Studios, Cinema Production Services and Edge FX.
Scooby-Doo 2 leads the weekend’s theater count with 3,312 venues as it takes on reigning champ Dawn of the Dead and fellow newcomers The Ladykillers from Buena Vista and the Coen Brothers, Jersey Girl from Miramax and director Kevin Smith, and the DMX vehicle Never Die Alone from Fox Searchlight.
