Alice in Wonderland blew away expectations with a smash opening weekend gross of $116 million.
The stereoscopic 3-D Disney movie, directed by Tim Burton and featuring extensive visual effects and animation, shattered the record for a March opening. It also set a record for the opening of a 3-D movie, previously held by Avatar‘s $77 million opening weekend.
Screenings across the nation were selling out, as audiences queued up for a chance to see the film. Alice also did extremely well overseas, grossing $94 million in 40 territories, for a worldwide weekend total of $210 million.
Alice took some 3-D screens away from Avatar, which fell to fifth place this weekend with a $7.7 million gross. That brings the all-time box office champ’s domestic total gross to $720 million.
The Secret of Kells opened in a single theater this weekend ‘ New York’s IFC Center ‘ and grossed $40,000. A wider release in major cities is planned for April 2.
The only other major release this weekend was Brooklyn’s Finest, an action crime film from Training Day director Antoine Fuqua. It earned an estimated $13.5 million, coming in second place for the weekend.
