Ponyo Sweeps Tokyo Anime Awards

Anime master Hayao Miyazaki has scored another big awards sweep with his latest feature, Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. The movie has been selected as the top Animation of the Year by the organizers of the 8th Annual Tokyo Anime Awards, according to Anime News Network. Under the rules of the award, the winning work must be one that “made the greatest contribution to the world of anime” during the year of its release. Ponyo also won the Domestic Feature Film category, while Miyazaki won in both the top director and story creator categories.

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea was Japan’s biggest box office hit in 2008, earning 15.50 billion yen (over US $172 million), more than double the second highest-grossing film, Boys Over Flowers Final. The English-language version of the movie is produced by Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy and John Lasseter and will showcase the voices of Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Cloris Leachman.

DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda won in the International Feature Film category. Macross Frontier, Shoji Kawamori and Goro Taniguchi and Sunrise’s Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 sequel were the TV winners. The Detroit Metal City anime was also recognized in the Original Video race.

The awards ceremony will take place on March 20, during the course of this year’s Tokyo Anime Fair at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center.
