Lady Death Goes to MIPCOM

Fresh from its debut at Comic-Con Int’l in San Diego, Calif., last month, the animated Lady Death: The Motion Picture is headed to MIPCOM in Cannes (Oct. 4-8). Produced and distributed by ADV Films, the anime actioner marks the company’s first foray into original, feature-length productions.

Based on Chaos! Comics’ popular character, Lady Death is set in 15th-Century Sweden, where a beautiful woman named Hope is accused of being the devil’s consort following a hellish incident witnessed by local villagers. As she is being burned at the stake, Hope accepts Lucifer’s offer of life in Hell over a hideously painful death. She later resists Lucifer’s scheme to corrupt a soul of pure innocence and eventually challenges him for control of Hell itself.

The screenplay was written by renowned writer Carl Macek, developer and story editor for Robotech; producer of the English-language version of Miyazaki’s classic My Neighbor Totoro; and producer and director of the English language version of Vampire Hunter D.

In the U.S., ADV Films will release Lady Death on DVD and VHS nationwide in October. The film will also premiere on the Anime Network, which is expanding from a video-on-demand service to a 24/7 digital linear network on Insight Communication.

ADV Films will also bring a number of other key titles to this year’s MIPCOM. Offerings will include Full Metal Panic, the story of a teenage secret agent assigned to protect an unwitting honor student from terrorists, and Angelic Layer, which centers on a small town girl who moves to Tokyo and is thrust into a high-tech, fast-paced game where dolls are controlled by the thoughts of their operators.
