Classic Trek on the Big Screen

Fans of the original Star Trek television series will soon have a chance to see two popular episodes in their local movie theaters, complete with new, start-of-the art visual effects and extra features. A re-mastered, HD version of the two-part storyline ‘The Menagerie’ from the show’s first season will screen in a special one-night event in select theatres nationwide on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Presented by NCM FATHOM, CBS Home Entertainment and, ‘The Menagerie’ will be accompanied by an introduction from creator Gene Roddenberry’s son, Eugene ‘Rod’ Roddenberry, as well as an exclusive, 30-minute behind-the-scenes look at how the episodes were digitally re-mastered from the original negatives and enhanced with CG animation. Recently overhauled for CBS Paramount Television’s syndicated Star Trek: The Original Series, the installments were scanned in high-definition and feature Cinema Surround Sound. The entire first season will be available as a 10-disc DVD set from Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS Home Entertainment on Nov. 20th.

‘The Menagerie,’ the eleventh episode of season one, debuted on November 17, 1966. The story finds Spock on trial for hijacking the Enterprise. He tells the strange tale of former Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike’s imprisonment on Talos IV 13 years earlier, and the last crew’s attempts to rescue him. The flashback footage was taken from the original pilot episode, which was rejected by NBC and didn’t make it to air until a full-color print was discovered in the 1980s.

The special theatrical screening will be offered in nearly 300 participating AMC, Cinemark, Georgia Theatre Co. and Regal Entertainment Group movie theatres across the country.
