RAI Trade’s Cartoons on the Bay festival has revealed more details about this year’s upcoming tributes and programs, which will take place April 2-5 in three main location’Rapallo, Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. The Golfo region of Tiglio will host movie previews, special events, conferences, meetings with authors, directors, producers and Italian and global TV execs. The festival was originally based in Positano, but it was held in Salerno for the past two years.
‘We received over 400 programs from 45 countries and nearly 200 have been selected,’ says Carlo Nardello, RaiTrade’s managing director. ‘This is a record that will guarantee a polyhedral configuration of images and themes.’
Among the new additions to the festival this year is a special focus on comics, videogames and multimedia content. Roberto Genovesi, the show’s new artistic director will oversee the special activities. Special tributes will also be made to
Gundam creator Tomino Yoshiyuki, Italian animation director Enzo D’Alo (The Blue Arrow, Lucky and Zorba) and Talus Taylor, the creator of the 1970s cult European animated series Les Barbapapas. D’Al’ will also oversee the Pitch Me! Pierluigi de Mas 2009 Award, a prize dedicated to new authors, producers and ideas. Japan’s Sunrise Studio, which produces Gundam, Daitarn 3, Cybory 009 and City Hunter, will receive the special Studio of the Year Pulcinella Award.
The festival will offer a special focus on the animation scene in Cuba, which will also receive a special Pulcinella Award. The country will be represented by Luis A. Gonzales Nieto, Cuba’s VP of the Cinematographic Art and Industry Institute and Esther Hirzel Galarza, director of the Cinematographic Art and Industry Institute.
Among the show’s other attractions is Pink Day in Rapallo scheduled for April 3. This day is dedicated to programs targeted at young girls. The Powerpuff Girls, Hannah Montana, Puberty (From Cuba) the French toon Loulou of Montmarte and RaiSat’s Smash Girls are all highlights of this special event.
