HypeFest 2004 wrapped up last week with its annual awards show honoring shorts, commercials, promos and music videos in all genres. The event even hosts a screenwriting contest and a special program for animated works dubbed "Saturday Morning Cartoons." The festival took place July 24 and July 25 at CineSpace in Hollywood and showcased approximately 75 original short works from filmmakers around the world.
Stash Magazine’s Animation Award, which honored the best animated project, was presented to The Balloon by Satinder Singh of Los Angeles, Calif. The 8 1/2-minute stop-motion short tells the story of a little girl who gets seperated from her over-protective mother, and has an adventure to find the balloon she lost. The work will be featured in the "Best of the Rest" showcase at the Ottawa Int’l Animation Festival on Sept. 23 and Sept. 26.
All award winners received a signature HypeFest trophy and a copy of The Ultimate Filmmaker’s Guide to Short Films by Kim Adelman. Other prizes were furnished by animation software company Kaydara, production and postproduction supplier Moviola, music production company Hear the Picture Musicworks, DVD magazine Stash, entertainment business software provider Media Services, film and video production resource 411 Publishing, indie music store Amoeba Music, retail beauty chain Sephora, Lucky Strike Lanes and publisher Michael Weise Prods.
