Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation have announced a release date for the new animated movie Wonder Woman. The latest installment in the DC Universe series of direct-to-video movies will hit retail on March 3, 2009. The Warner Home Video release will also be available for download, OnDemand and via Pay-Per-View on the same day.
Produced by multiple Emmy Award-winning animation legend Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series), Wonder Woman is an origin story that begins on the mystical island of Themyscira, home of a proud and fierce race of Amazons. Raised to be a great warrior, the beautiful Princess Diana possesses extraordinary strength and incredible fighting prowess, as well as a few super-human powers granted to her by the gods and goddesses of Olympus. When Air Force fighter pilot Steve Trevor crash lands on the island, the rebellious and headstrong Diana defies Amazonian law by accompanying him back to civilization. Meanwhile, Ares, the god of war, has escaped his imprisonment at the hands of the Amazons and has decided to exact his revenge by starting a world war that will destroy them all. It’s up to Princess Diana to save her people and the world by using her unique gifts.
Led by Keri Russell (Waitress, Felicity) in the title role, the voice cast includes Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), Virginia Madsen (Sideways), Rosario Dawson (Sin City), Oliver Platt (The West Wing) and David McCallum (NCIS).
The flick will be available as a single-disc DVD for $19.98, two-disc Special Edition DVD for $29.98 (SRP) and Blu-ray Disc for $34.99. The Special Edition and Blu-ray versions will feature collectible packaging and 185 minutes of bonus material. Fans of DC’s lasso-wielding heroine can look forward to the featurette Wonder Woman: A Subversive Dream, which examines why Wonder Woman is important in the grand scheme of the DC Universe, and how her raw strength and power helped define a new generation of empowered women. Wonder Woman: The Daughters of Myth is a documentary that looks at the historical significance of the Amazons and their link to the evolution of the Wonder Woman character. There will also be audio commentary with producer Bruce Timm, director Lauren Montgomery, screenwriter Michael Jelenic and DC Comics senior VP of creative affairs Gregory Noveck. In addition, Timm has hand-picked popular Justice League/Justice League Unlimited episodes featuring Wonder Woman to include on the various versions.
Consumers will also be offered a digital copy download of the movie for portable video devices, and a sneak peek at the next DC Universe original animated movie, details of which have yet to be revealed. Check out the Wonder Woman trailer at (www.wonderwomanmovie.com).
