McCain and Obama aren’t the only candidates wooing American voters. Iconic Peanuts characters Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy and Sally are all running for President in an online mock election. This first partnership between the Peanuts property and Rock the Vote offers fans a chance to mark their ballots at www.peanutsrocksthevote.com.

Voters can review the candidates’ bios, read their platforms, cast a vote and even register to vote in the actual 2008 election using Rock the Vote’s custom online voter registration tool. For nearly 20 years, Rock the Vote has been using music, popular culture and new technologies to inform young people on political issues and encourage them to register and vote.

Peanuts has a long and memorable history with elections. Creator Charles Schulz worked campaign-related storylines into the comic strip during the presidential election years of 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1990. In fact, Snoopy became so popular as a write-in candidate in the real elections of 1968 and 1972 that the California legislature passed a law making it illegal to enter the name of a fictional character on the ballot. The “Political Peanuts” exhibition at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, Calif. takes a light-hearted look at the political process in 30 Peanuts strips and other artifacts. The exhibit opened on July 16 and will be open through Dec. 1. 2008. Learn more at www.schulzmuseum.org.

A re-mastered, deluxe edition DVD of the animated special You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown is slated for release through Warner Home Video on Oct. 7. In the cartoon, Linus campaigns for student body president and starts looking like a shoo-in until he starts talking about the Great Pumpkin. Bonus materials will include an all-new Peanuts cartoon titled He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown and newly produced behind-the-scenes content featuring interviews with the Schulz family. Peanuts is licensed and syndicated by United Media, a wholly owned subsidiary of the E.W. Scripps Co.
