As live-action continues to creep into outlets traditionally dedicated to animation, Disney has announced that it will re-brand its Toon Disney television and online platforms in the U.S. as Disney XD. The 24-hour, advertiser-supported network’s programming will consist of a mix of live-action and animated programming for kids 6-14, “hyper-targeting” boys. The transformation will be seen in February of 2009 on television, web, mobile and VOD platforms.
Disney XD programming will include series, movies and short-form productions, as well as sports-themed shows developed with ESPN. The channel currently reaches nearly 70 million households via its basic cable affiliates. For the 19 Jetix channels and six Toon Disney channels and programming blocks in all other parts of the world, any potential re-branding decisions will be made on a case by case basis at a later date.
“Disney Channel is a huge business serving kids all around the world, and it's especially successful with girls, and our goal with Disney XD is to have that same success ratio with boys,” says Rich Ross, president of Disney Channels Worldwide. “Disney XD will showcase great stories and empowering characters with Disney's brand credibility and a cool creative factor that will set it apart from the pack.”
New animated properties include the short-form series Hero and Not (working title), produced in Italy by Studio Bozzetto & Co SRL, and RoboDz, a CG-animated and live-action short form comedy series co-produced by Toei Animation Company Ltd. and Walt Disney Television International Japan. Other featured series will included the Disney Channel hit animated comedy Phineas and Ferb, and the superhero cartoons Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man and Iron Man.
The New live-action programs will include Aaron Stone, an original, single camera adventure series about a teenager who is enlisted to become the real-life version of a legendary, crime fighting online game character. The series is exec produced by Bruce Kalish (Disney Channel's The Famous Jett Jackson) and Suzanne French (Overruled!, Life with Derek), and produced in HD (HD) by Shaftesbury Services II, Inc. Mongoose & Luther (working title) is a single camera, documentary-style single camera show about two best friends who set their sights on becoming world famous skateboarders. The creators and executive producers are Matt Dearborn and Tom Burkhard (both of Disney Channel's Even Stevens). Filmed in HD, the series is a production of Turtle Rock Prods., Inc.
Disney XD will be the seventh brand in the kid-driven TV and radio business of The Walt Disney Co. The company’s global portfolio encompasses Playhouse Disney, Disney Channel, Radio Disney, Disney Cinemagic, Toon Disney and Jetix.

I`d hope to see power rangers on this channel. They didn`t even finish rerunning Dino Thunder at least put that back even if its just weekends. I`m pissed off about this. It would be a bright idea to put power rangers on this channel and it would be a even brighter to FINISH DINO THUNDER. PLEASE I know its old and they had it on and reran it a lot but its a good show.

If they want to make Disney Channels more compatible with boys then why don\'t they just put more shows that appeal to them? It makes no sense to mess with Toon Disney. I think that it would be very cool if they created Disney XD and kept Toon Disney, so that they would have three channels and have a wide varitey of shows without taking other shows off the air. I am very excited for it though because it looks like it\'ll be good-I\'ve been hoping they would but some old shows like Even Stevens back on. Also, I am a tad offended at their approach for this new channel...saying that it is intended for boys and stuff. I realize what they are saying and they aren\'t meaning it offensively but it\'s kind of sexist to separate the channels up baised on gender. Because there are many girls that like the same shows as boys and vise versa. Or at least that holds true for me, becuase I know that I love \'girl\' and \'boy\' shows, and yet I think I adore \'boy\' shows a whole lot better. They have more entertaining plots and characters and an actual meaning to the show while most girly shows are about school life or friendship or relationship problems, which is fine. See, I always loved saturday cartoons: TMNT, Justice League, Spider Man, Digimon, Anime, ect. so when they say stuff like that, it\'s kind of like the company is trying to make this channel exclusively for boys, which I am assuming is the point. But whatever...Oh I am super excited because I heard/read on wikipedia that Disney XD might have Static Shock in the lineup! I SO hope that that is true...I loved that show and it should still be on the air because it was amazing. If you don\'t believe me or don\'t know what Static Shock is, go to wikipedia and look it up :D

My last comment was cut off. I was saying that the girl shows were mainly focused on school, friendships & relationships. I loved the \'boy\' themed shows because they had entertaining & interesting plots, characters and cool animation. Yes, I think boys are lucky because they get all the cool shows like TMNT, the really cool anime, super heroes-spiderman, ironman, justice league, ect. Anyways, I am super excited because I read on Wikipedia that Static Shock may be in the lineup! I am SO excited & pleased if that is true because that show was amazing & so deserves to still be on air. I wish it wasn\'t canceled especially since that was due to no funding by the company. That would be wonderful if they brought it back, made new episodes or a movie out of that emmy nominated show. If you don\'t believe me, go search for Static Shock on wikipedia...

Disney XD actually sounds like a good idea. I have Verizon FiOs, so i\'ve got all the channels, and I almost NEVER watch Toon Disney. The fact that they almost ONLY air cartoon shows is stupid, considering that live action shows are becoming more popular. Also, they only air OCCASIONAL live action movies. All of their shows are old too, so getting rid of Toon Disney sounds even better. While I\'ll somewhat miss Jetix, the shows they have planned look like they will make up for it. Some of the more popular Jetix shows will be aired on Diseny XD, so Jetix fans won\'t be too disappointed. The new channel seems like it will target boys well, not that girls can\'t watch. With comedy, animated, action, sport, and other genres of show, this channel will most likely become a success.

I also love Toon Disney. Separate stations is the way to go! Everyone would win in the end since it would please fans of both Jetix and the toon fans (not only that, but potentially the more views a company gets the more money made so Disney itself would benefit). Personally, I love the classic cartoons and will be really sad if they are removed only because Disney would rather have a \"boy\'s channel\". Not exactly fair to the \"girls\" or to those who don\'t care for Jetix stuff. :(

I go to Walt Disney World often and we love the retro Disney cartoons they have running in their in room tv sets. I wish Disney would have a channel for all the older cartoons like, Dark Wing Duck, Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Pepper Ann and for sure the old Disney: Mickey Mouse etc. We just love House of Mouse and really hope you leave it on! I know right now in our country people like to feel the security of the past, Disney should plug into it and their would be a market.

The other point I\\\'d like to make is that my daughter is a girl and she is NOT into Hannah Montana and hates the new Demi Levato show, Life with Derek could be left off. Because of changes like this kids are getting dumber very quickly. The live action series are all crap and the acting is horrible. Plus in foreign countries (like the Netherlands, where I live) ALL the XD shows are being dubbed. This is horrible and makes the reasonable shows unbearable to watch. We used to have kids shows aired in English with subtitles but I guess reading is to much to ask from children nowadays. I learned how to READ and learned most of my ENGLISH from TELEVISION but the new generation won\'t have this advantage. When I was 6 or 7 my English was already better than most 14 year olds now. It\'s a bloody shame. (sorry for ranting)
