Back in 2001, Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon announced that an animated series based on the feature film and live-action television show was in the works. The toon was being developed for the Fox Kids Saturday morning lineup, but never got any further than a four-minute pilot. That pilot episode is now online for fans to check out. Watch it below.

Actress Giselle Loren, who provided the voice of Buffy in the two video games, reprised the role for the animated pilot and was joined by live-action Buffy cast members Alyson Hannigan (Willow), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) and Nicholas Brendon (Xander). Loren is the third actress to take up the stake of blonde cheerleader Buffy. Kristy Swanson originated the role in Twentieth Century Fox’s 1992 feature film, which spawned the WB television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Gellar took a pass on the animated series to focus on her film career, which has included the horror thrillers The Grudge and The Return. She ended up voicing the role of April O’Neil in TMNT, Imagi’s CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Such a shame this cartoon didn\'t make it in the lineup. The pilot episode is pretty cool.
