Vanguard Animation has joined forces with Platinum Studios to form Vanguard Comics, a new imprint designed to develop properties that can be introduced both as graphic novels/comic books and feature projects. The venture is headed by Platinum CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and Vanguard Animation chair and founder John H. Williams (Shrek movies, Valiant, Space Chimps) according to Daily Variety.

Their first property is Illegal Aliens, a comic created by Kevin MacDougall which centers on a skeptical tabloid reporter who investigates a series of cattle mutilations by the legendary chupacabra monster. The project was one of the 50 finalists of the Comic Book Challenge.

"When Scott asked me to be part of the Comic Book Challenge, I thought it would be a great way to hear story concepts," Williams told Variety. "Scott and I both immediately agreed that Illegal Aliens was a full throttle horror thriller that had franchise potential.”

In addition to developing live-action projects such as the Walter Salles-directed On the Road, Vanguard continues to be heavily involved in animation features. Williams and company’s 2008 slate includes Kirk de Micco-directed Space Chimps, which will be released by Fox Studios on July 18.
