Butler Goes Pirate for Watchmen

Gerard Butler, who rocketed to stardom by portraying the lead character in Warner Bros.’ take on the Frank Miller graphic novel 300, will play a role in director Zack Snyder’s next comic-book adaptation. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, he confirmed a Comic-Con announcement that he will lend his voice to an animated segment depicting a comic book within the Watchmen graphic novel by Allan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

In Watchmen, a character is reading a pirate comic titled Tales of the Black Freighter, in which a shipwrecked seaman struggles to get home and protect his wife and child from attack by marauding pirate ship. In streamlining the story for the screen, Snyder and Warner Bros. are reportedly leaving the side story out of the film, but plan to produce it for the DVD release. The sequences will be portrayed with an anime style of animation, according to Butler.

Scheduled to open on March 6, 2009, Watchmen set in a time when superheroes have been outlawed and revolves around a group of caped crusaders who struggle with their own personal demons while trying to avert a nuclear war between the United States and Russia. The a cast that includes Jackie Earle Haley, Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman.
