Ben 10 Movie Sets Record on CN

It’s perhaps a dark day for animation when the most-watched telecast in Cartoon Network history is a live-action movie, but at least Ben 10: Race Against Time is a live-action movie based on a hit animated series and featuring a healthy dose of CG-animated effects. The 90-minute telepic premiered in prime-time on Wednesday night and drew in nearly 4 million viewers ages two and up, out-performing the network’s 2002 presentation of Dragon Ball Z, which previously held the record.
Directed by Alex Winter, who co-stared with Keanu Reeves in the Bill and Ted movies, Race Against Time stars Graham Phillips (Evan Almighty) as Ben Tennyson, a normal 10-year-old boy who finds a piece of alien technology that allows him to transform into a variety of super aliens. Lee Majors (The Six Million Dollar Man) also stars as Grandpa Max, who uses his past experiences with the paranormal to guide and protect his grandchildren, Ben and Gwen, through their many adventures in fighting evil.
Citing Nielsen ratings data, Cartoon Network says Race Against Time was also the top telecast of the day on all television—both cable and broadcast—with boys 6-11 and boys 2-11. The show also led the Network to post its most-watched day ever in total day delivery with kids 6-11 (785,000), kids 2-11 (1,101,000), boys 6-11 (615,000) and boys 2-11 (840,000).
The first live-action Ben 10 outing tied with the 2002 telecast of Dragon Ball Z as Cartoon Network’s most-watched telecast among boys 6-11 with approximately 1,210,000 viewers in the coveted demographic. The property was also popular on the web, where the network’s sneak peek of Race Against Time garnered 666,000 plays to rank as the most-played video spot on CartoonNetwork.com. In addition, the online game Ben 10: Race Against Time—Savage Pursuit was played 14.8 million times since its Oct. 15 launch.

Yes Ben 10 does rock but this movie sunk like a stone. This movie was fast forward hell if you have a DVR or Tivo. The bulk of this movie had more verbal filler than bulk laxative. Some of that bulk was also stuffed in the cheeks of the two child actors who were too busy wrestling their tounges around their lines to act convincingly. They obviously got their parts simply based on their looks. A healthy dose of CG animation? More like a bare minimum! Ok, so maybe they didn\'t have the budget to make this a real live action CG combo movie. Then why mess with a proven process?!!! Animate the damn thing but make it some of he best damn 2d animation you\'ve ever made! Face it. The Ben 10 animated series rocks because of the great animated action, visual direction, character design, voice acting and whimsical plots. This movie had a throwaway villain, slow pacing, crappy acting (despite a few veteran actors like Lee Majors and Robert Picardo) plus cheap Power Rangers style stunts and visual effects and a crap plot to boot. I tuned in expecting more and slogged through it just to see the short money shots aka the CG animated sequences.

I agree that the movie was not up to the standards of quality live-action children\\\'s fare - but most live-action productions are pretty poor. All I know is that my son loved it, in spite of its manifest flaws (you hit the nail on the head on all points, NunYoBidness). Personally, I had to stop myself from snickering through the obvious speeches. Had the writers viewed a Justice League episode lately they might have learned how you can have campy super-hero-speak sound somewhat passable. On the special effects front, it is a bit better than Power Rangers, but that\\\'s not saying too much.
All live-action kids\\\' fare seems to suffer from the problems noted above - I have *not* seen the animated version of Ben 10 - I\\\'d not even have thought of viewing it after watching the movie, but after your comments, Nun, I\\\'ll have to check it out.

Ben 10 is a great cartoon but you guys were right . I tooked a look at the live action movie the other day and it sucked huge amounts of balls. I hope it doesn\'t kill the ratings of the cartoon show. That would be incredibly sad. Until LIve action films can kick animated films asses, i\'ll be around.
