Chowder Debuts on Cartoon Network

Cartoon fans looking for something with a unique look and voice can check out
Chowder, a fantasy food comedy series that premieres tonight (Nov. 2) at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT).The special one-hour episode will air during Cartoon Network’s Fried Dynamite block.

Chowder takes young viewers to the magical city of Marzipan, where a young chef’s apprenticeship deals with surreal situations and potential disasters on the road to becoming a great chef himself. In Marzipan City, everything revolves around food. Snail Cars crowd the streets and colorful citizens hustle about as the Mung Daal Catering Company cooks up deliciously odd edibles. It’s here that young Chowder (voiced by 11-year-old Nicky Jones) toils under the watchful eye of the eccentric and much older Mung Daal (Dwight Schultz), assisting with such kitchen duties as cooking Sing Beans until they warble on key, nursing a bruised Bluenana back to health, or delivering a thousand-pound cake to a man who lives on the head of a giant. But what he really wants to do is cook, and is willing to try the most outlandish dishes in a bid to get noticed for his skills.

Heavily nfluenced by the art of famed cartoonist Sergio Aragonés, the show’s animation is mostly hand drawn by Hong Ying in China, which was recently selected as the official animation studio by the Beijing Olympics. The show also features watercolor-and-ink backgrounds and stop-motion inserts animated by Screen Novelties in Hollywood.

An original production of Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, Calif., Chowder is created by Carl H. Greenblatt, a self-taught veteran storyboard artist at Cartoon Network Studios who is also credited with creating and voicing the character Fred Fredburger on Maxwell Atom’s The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Learn more about Chowder from Greenblatt and creative director Bill Reis in the November issue of Animation Magazine.

I believe Chowder is one of the most amazing cartoons i have seen in a very long time. Good cartoons only come across every now and then. And this cartoon has EVERYTHING. Word play, humor, a character no one can understand, bad singing, odd character with very distinct individualities, i mean everything. I am so glad i found this cartoon. The creator is just amazing, (i love his character Fred Fredburger as well, its meh fav--too bad its only in like 2 episodes). And i don\'t care what Chowder is--he\'s just amazing. And you can\'t truly trust Wikipedia (ha!). I don\'t see anyone questioning what Mung Daal is lol.

Anyone see the bank episode with an aggrivated Shnitzel and crusty old man? Hilarious. i recommend you watch it.

    Bravo.

I am so glad to see that so many people like Chowder! As a recent college grad, I used to watch CN all the time while studying. After a few years, I have found new shows during the day to be mediocre, until I saw Chowder. It is awesome, and I now Tivo it all the time. One of my college buddies totally loves it to. Cannot wait for more Chowder!

part of my day consists of chowder. i dont feel complete until i have seen it. i find myself whistling it in the middle of the day and either people know what im whistling or they give me a funny look. very good show. they ought to offer an interperative manual for schnitzel.

  • Kerry Maxwell :
    Saturday, December 20, 2008

Terrible infantile voice acting, terrible animation, pathetic character design, over-used fart / burp humor - what\'s to like? Animation on CN is in a truly desperate and artistically bankrupt state, and worst of all, it\'s just not funny.

  • Mari :
    Saturday, March 07, 2009

I agree with Kerry, the cartoon has a not too great sense of humor. There\'s a difference between well thought out nonsense cartoons and cartoons with slapstick, fart/burp stupidity. Why must the characters have such overly exaggerated body parts? Kind of unattractive.. CN must really be desperate.

Chowder is a very cool show this reminds me of the shows i used to watch on nick, a long time ago such as rocos modern life, ahh real monsters , and the angry beavers. And the character showder reminds me of some the characters of richard scary television show...the artwork of showder not many shows are like this the city of marzzipan is great the art is great in the back ground, and the way they combine, animation and some stop motion, ohh and puppetry is amazing A+ for chowder.
