The major studios love franchises. When successful, they can generate literally billions of dollars in box office, DVD sales and licensed products.

Now comes word that Sony is preparing to spend over $100 million to launch Spider-Man 3. According to a report in Daily Variety, Sony is planning nine red carpet launches around the world before the film’s May 4 debut. This summer will be filled with so-called tent pole films, many of them ‘toons or heavy on visual effect. Among others, summer 2007 will see the third chapter of Pirates of the Caribbean, the fifth installment in the Harry Potter, The Simpsons Movie, The Transformers and Shrek 3.
