Some classic cartoons are brushing up on their French, as Canada’s Teletoon Retro expands its audience as a new offering of the Bell TV systems.

The move brings the number of subscribers to the French-language cartoon network to more than 1.3 million. The combined subscriber base of the French and English versions of Teletoon Retro in Canada is now more than 6.5 million.

Teletoon Retro airs such classic animated fare as Bugs Bunny et Tweety (The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show), Inspecteur Gadget (Inspector Gadget) and Tom et Jerry (The Tom & Jerry Show).

The Bell TV launch was accompanied by a Teletoon Retro Montreal street stunt in which props from recognizable cartoons –such as an ACME anvil, Bugs Bunny carrots and “Wabbit Season” signs — are transplanted to the real world and refer people to special microsites available in both English and French: www.acmeanvils.ca and www.industrieacme.com; www.wabbittseason.ca and www.chasselapin.com; www.lostdino.com and www.dinoperdu.com; and www.hovercar.ca and www.voiturevolante.com.

Founded in 1997, Teletoon Canada Inc. is owned by Astral Media and Corus Entertainment.
