SC Animator Launches Sendak Tribute Site

With the October 16 release of Spike Jonze’s much anticipated Where the Wild Things Are rapidly approaching, one intrepid artists has launched an online project packed with artwork made in tribute to Maurice Sendak’s beloved characters and tales. The site, TerribleYellowEyes.com, is a curatorial project and ongoing blog conceived by Greenville, SC-based artist Cory Godbey, who serves as an illustrator, animator and writer for Portland Studios.

TerribleYellowEyes.com launched in May of this year, and currently hosts over 110 pieces by artists from across the U.S. and around the world. The site’s rapid growth caught the attention of Los Angeles’ Gallery Nucleus, which organized an exhibition of work by Godbey and TYE’s other contributors, which will run at the Gallery through October 6.

According to the 26-year-old animator, discovering Sendak’s work was a “watershed moment” which helped him understand what he wanted to do as an artist. “My goal for this project is really to express my love for the story,” Godbey shares, “The art hasn’t been done for profit of any kind; rather, out of admiration for Sendak and his masterwork.”
